Hackworth was the first
engineer to establish the steam engine as a
completely reliable machine. He was appointed to
take charge of the locomotives on the Stockton
to Darlington Railway and he also built a
locomotive works at Shildon as part of the line.
In 1829, Hackworth entered the engine 'Sans
Pareil' (pictured right) for the Rainhill Trails. The engine was
withdrawn due to a cracked cylinder. Hackworth
resigned from the Stockton and Darlington
Railway and continued with his locomotive
business in Shildon. |
